Montréal, Québec - March 7, 2020: Andrew and Monica will meet again next week for their Tuesday lunch routine.
Monica Jordan is a mother of three. She moved to Canada in 1957 on a boat from Liverpool, England.
After her sons grew up, they started their own families – Adrian, the oldest lives in New York State and the youngest is in Ottawa. She is unable to see them that often, besides her middle son Andrew, who still lives in Montréal.
She describes him as a different, very quiet kid growing up. So, it was a surprise for her when he went through the goth period for about 10 years. Andrew used to go to Les Foufounes, a club where "you dance and crash into walls," Monica recalls.
After he got married, Andrew gradually became a workaholic. He was a chef in a sports bar in Pointe-Claire, being in charge of the kitchen and working up to 17 hours a day. If someone was sick, he would always pick up their shifts, so he worked himself into a situation that it did not help his health. According to Monica, that was a major part of the stroke in 2010. As a consequence, he is able to walk but only with a cane and not properly. He drags his foot and he does not feel his left hand.
For a while, his wife Dianne, who is also a chef, took care of him, before she made the decision to travel more. The couple separated a year ago. Andrew moved to Notre-Dame-de-Grâce in a one-bedroom apartment with his cat Charlie.
Monica and Andrew meet every Tuesday at the Dollard Civic Centre and he visits her for lunch on Saturdays. She also helps him with the grocery.
They make each other laugh: “She is as goofy as I am,” Andrew describes his ma.
