The Catholic cemetery located on Mount Royal is one of the many necropolises that is our final destination (unless you believe in reincarnation of the soul or prefer to be cremated) - the let-go of our material selves.
The cemetery rises to the top of the hill, an analogy of ascending as depicted in the photographic sequence, when progressively, the amount of light increases with climbing. At the top is the brightest and it gives the impression of reaching to the heavens, as the cemetery is a journey towards the Divine, so one can be set free - have you done enough volunteer work or charity? - from this world.
The path circles around vast stone mausoleums cut into the hillside, sometimes with ornate brass or copper doors, statues of angels, plinths, pietas, vases, Madonnas, mosaics, icons and statues of different saints.
Each monument is highly individualized and, sometimes, extremely ornate. That gives the impression of extravagance, where the living recreate and preserve their own image and likeness, what is never to return.
The artistry of fear is on display - fear of death and fear of hell - the ultimate salvation in this lonely place, full of remains and washed-out symbolism. The question is: How would you imagine your farewell spot?
This is the portfolio of my recent projects in visual journalism and multimedia.
